Kelly

19:41

Kelly Casey had experienced a few eventful Valentine’s Days in her life, but this one had the potential to be the most memorable one yet. That was because she was doing something that had seemed highly unlikely only a short time ago, and she had no idea how it was going to go. All she knew was that she had to do it because it was now or never.

“What are you doing here?” her husband asked as he walked into the waiting room and caught sight of her.

The sight of Tom in a smart navy shirt caught her a little off guard, mainly because he wasn’t wearing the policeman’s uniform that she had been expecting him to be. That black and white clothing had become engrained in her mind during their relationship, but now he looked a lot different.

He looked smarter. More handsome. Happier.

“You look well,” Kelly said, ignoring Tom’s original question. “New uniform?”

“I’m in a different team now,” Tom replied, glancing nervously behind Kelly to where a more traditionally dressed police officer was sitting behind the reception desk in the waiting room. Kelly assumed his display of nervousness was because he was worried about another argument breaking out here in his workplace, but she wasn’t here to argue. She was here for quite the opposite.

“A promotion?” Kelly asked, genuinely interested.

“Kind of,” Tom replied, still displaying signs of agitation.

“Congratulations,” Kelly said, and she meant it. She knew how hard he worked at his job, even if she had often teased him about it during their relationship.

“What’s this about?”

It was clear that Tom was in no mood for pleasantries, which Kelly felt a little disappointed about considering they hadn’t seen each other for a couple of months. But she also understood. The last time they had seen each other had been in the presence of divorce lawyers, so it had hardly been conducive to good conversation.

“Is there somewhere more private we could talk?” Kelly asked, taking the opportunity to look in the direction of the officer behind the reception desk herself.

“Come here,” Tom said, and he walked away, leaving Kelly to scurry behind him as she followed him through a set of double doors and into a small room in the corridor beyond.

As Tom closed the door behind her, Kelly realised that she was in what she would call an ‘interrogation room’. A table and chairs sat in the centre of the room, and a camera in the corner of the ceiling was pointed in their direction.

“It’s not recording,” Tom clarified as he signalled for Kelly to take a seat at the table.

Kelly did as he wished, but Tom continued to stand, leaning back against the wall and crossing his arms, making the woman suddenly feel like she was the one being interrogated now.

“What do you want?” Tom asked.

The interrogation had obviously begun.

“I’ve got the divorce papers through,” Kelly replied, placing the papers in her hand onto the table in front of her.

“I can see that. Have you signed them?”

Kelly remained silent for a moment before shaking her head.
